Crikey!

NIGEL:
Merlot was due any day now. So Susan came up the other morning & said she thought Merlot was looking different & that I should check her out. Anyway I came down & saw that her cervical plug had bust. So I ran up to check the Breeding Goats book. It said that she would experience between 12-36 hours of labor pains. I decided to leave to go see a farm with a mate of mine named Jack. I then called him, as I was concerned about the birth (had the birthing kit on ready), & said lets go Thursday instead. After more consideration & a chat with Susan, I called him back to say I would go.

So I checked on Merlot & then headed off with Jack.

I arrived back about 3 hours later & went to do the chores in the chook house (water, food, collect the eggs, etc.) & then went to check on Merlot. She was in the 2nd barn still. There was loads of blood & other stuff on the ground in the barn & I thought this may have been part of the pre-birth. So I casually went to Merlot to say "Its okay girl hang in there..." when crikey... there was lil' Crikey behind the partition!!!!

Quite a surprise for sure. So I raced for the camera, after checking that all seemed fine & took some photos. I then cleaned up the mess on the floor & collected the placenta from up on the barn roost where Crikey & Merlot were both looking at each other stunned. Merlot had cleaned her up (critical in the bonding between doe & kid).

What a brilliant surprise.

Cleaned Barns

NIGEL:

Cleaned out the barns & surroundings as the wasted feed & straw mixed with the urine & poop from the goats has a massive compost effort underway. 4 large wheel burrow loads later it is dry & healthy again! All with Daisy's help of course!!!

Ready?!?!?!?

NIGEL:
We have the birthing kit ready & the trailer cage also... just in case there are complications with the birth. Merlot is getting very pregnant. Her udder is huge, along with her belly. Again, hopefully we will not need to do anything except enjoy the surprise!

Chardonnay, on the other hand, remains jittery when not doing her daily stretching... see photo below!

Added a new fenced area for the goats up near the shed, so we could see them from our deck more often & have them mow that area when needed. They really enjoy it, although the shed is taking a beating!!!

Broody

 NIGEL:
We have several broody hens, but only one who stays on the eggs. Yes we wasted several under some of the hens. So now we have 6 under a hen who is being like "Horton" in Dr Seuss's Horton Hatches an Egg. So hopefully we will have 6 of 2spot's offspring!?!?

The ladies have been enjoying numerous dust baths in the 'run' on our dry days... which have been few & far between lately.

Mowing

NIGEL:
We have been having the goats graze in our front yard & along the roadside outside our fence.

They have been doing a decent job, especially outside our fence. We also lured several chickens to scratch up the grubs in our grass. Hopefully we will defeat the Japanese Beetle this way?!?!?

2Spot

NIGEL:
I know we've been slack, so here we go with the updates.

2Spot has become the king of the roost... for now. He is a good rooster & keeps the hens in line.

Pregnant

NIGEL:
Well Merlot is definitely pregnant. She is filling out & her udder is also!
Unfortunately, it looks like Daisy isn't, which is very disappointing. I went & bought all of the listed gear for a medical kit to assist with the birthing if needed. Hopefully we will just be on lookers & maybe Merlot will have more than one kid?.
