Selling Eggs

NIGEL:
Well we placed an ad in the Appalachian State University Marketplace. We had a rush of buyers (8 dozen) & with our somewhat regulars we were down to 1 egg!! Additionally, we have orders for 2-3 dozen more awaiting & several of our new buyers want to establish a regular delivery, which is what we want, so we can plan ahead.

Very exciting! At least this will help subsidize the feed, electricity, etc. costs! Off to plan a strategy as the snow & sleet comes down.

Molting

NIGEL:
Well the hens are molting (we think). They are mainly losing the feathers on their backs & around their heads (see photos). Initially, we thought it was the result of the roosters & hens pecking at each other b/c of boredom when it was cold & snowy.

Jack Attack!

NIGEL:
Well the 4 roosters have been attacking Susan on a regular basis. Maybe because she chats with the hens, which the roosters see as a threat. Blackbeard has kept his distance from me since the whack. Jack usually pretends, but yesterday he actually attacked me. That fired up Buster who thought about attacking also. Both Jack & Buster attack from behind.

Jack enjoys pecking at Susan. Pecking is usually a result of curiosity. Buster attacked her pretty well the to her day, scratching up her legs, despite wearing cotton track pants. May be the result of pent up energy as they are loving that much of the snow has melted & they have been able to wander outside & scratch around.

100%

NIGEL:
Sorry it has been a while. Lots of snow & cold has limited our interactions with the chickens.

Well we attained our maximum in one day.....
19 hens & 19 eggs! Awesome. Our egg sales are looking up. I think we gave away too many initially, or maybe not? Anyway orders for 6+ dozen the last 2 days.

Bruce....a hermaphrodite?

NIGEL:
Did Bruce, our transsexual chook, lay an egg?
Is s/he a hermaphrodite?
Check out the tiny egg I discovered lying on the straw in the middle of the coop?!
The mystery continues?!?!?!?!?!?

mmmmm....

NIGEL:
Susan has been exploring her cooking skills!! Does she have any??
Well, yes... at least when it comes to eggs. She received a devilled egg double tray for Chrissy from her dad & step-mom.

She made 24 deviled eggs. ten she explored making an egg salad for our sandwiches. She used yogurt & variety of other things to make fantastic eggs recipes. Hopefully we will have them up on our website soon!!
